Overview:
Traditionally, object technology has been restricted to programmers using languages such as C++, Smalltalk, Objective C, and Eiffel. Programmers must invest a substantial amount of time becoming proficient in these languages before they can become productive using object technology. The JavaScript object structure allows a developer to begin using objects almost instantly.
JavaScript is an excellent tool for educators to introduce object technology to students It is also a valuable tool for attracting professionals from various disciplines and technological backgrounds into using objects. JavaScript may be a tool that enables object technology to pervade all disciplines. A report out of the findings of this workshop will be presented to the Educators' Symposium.
Goals:
The workshop will discuss how to exploit JavaScript and use it as a vehicle for providing object mentoring and richer content on the Web. It will determine the efficacy of JavaScript as a tool for teaching object technology to newcomers and students.
Focus:
The workshop will begin with a fill-in-the-gaps session. Since we are attracting a wide audience of people with varied backgrounds, we will bring everyone to the same level with a brief description of JavaScript. We will identify the obstacles in making object technology pervasive across all disciplines. We will discuss the problems associated with mentoring in object technology and how JavaScript can be used to address these problems. We will conclude with discussing the next steps: Where will technology go next in making OT pervasive? What characteristics are important for a technology that will make OT pervasive?
Requirements for Attendance:
We are soliciting an eclectic group of participants which includes, but is not limited to: OO professionals, educators, and managers. All levels in any of these categories are welcome. Potential participants should submit a one page position paper. Any additional materials for consideration may be sent.
