Development of Object-Oriented Frameworks

Overview

The development of frameworks are a key aspect of achieving the benefits of object-oriented technology, providing opportunities for reuse of analysis, design and code. The purpose of this workshop is to achieve a greater understanding of how to avoid pitfalls and develop successful frameworks. We will bring together people who are actively involved in aspects of framework development to address the following issues. How can we

  • Achieve the right level of generality in a framework, given shifting requirements?
  • Communicate the framework architecture and achieve usability?
  • Justify boundaries when testing for correctness and completeness?
  • Design effective economic models to clarify what should be framework-developed?
  • Any other area of concern to framework development.

The workshop activities will include pre-distribution of position papers, identification and sharing of experience in small groups, and round-table summary. The result of the workshop will be a greater understanding of open issues and of the approaches that do and don't work.

    Participants

Participants should have worked on the development of at least one framework and have sufficient background in framework development to have experienced the issues outlined above. Potential participants are invited to submit a position paper, ideally including a brief project description and describing concrete experiences - both positive and negative. Generalizations of these experiences in pattern form are encouraged.

Researchers are also welcome to participate, and should contact the organizers with a proposal describing how they will contribute to the goals of the workshop.
