Object-Oriented Technology for
Health Care and Medical Information Systems
San Jose, CA
October 7th, 1996

Overview:
Current health care and medical information systems must undergo major changes to meet the new, and still emerging, national health care requirements. Using object-oriented technology can be the way to address these demands and certainly will affect the extent to which new opportunities are realized. This workshop is the third workshop with the same title.
Goals:
The purpose of the workshop is to explore the potential of using object-oriented technology in solving the problems facing existing health care and medical information systems. It will also serve as a vehicle to report on current and future efforts to develop innovative object-oriented applications in this area.
Focus:
A number of specific areas in this field can benefit from object-oriented technology: Electronic medical records, clinical workstations, point of care systems, executive information systems, integrating heterogeneous medical databases, security of object-oriented medical systems, outcomes and utilization review, integrated delivery networks, managed care support systems, claims management and processing, claims processing and EDI, fraud detection, marketing health care products, health care and the information highway. General topics that may also be of interest include: Patterns, Frameworks, Health Care Business Objects, and CORBA.
It is expected that this workshop will bring together a variety of experiences and insights that may contribute to the future development and advancement of health care and medical information systems.
Requirements for Attendance:
Workshop attendance is by invitation only. Interested participants are expected to have participated in the development of object-oriented medical information systems or have knowledge of how object-oriented technology could be applied to health care. Participants are expected to contribute to discussion and to share experiences on the nature and value of object technology for these systems.
A position paper addressing one or more of the above mentioned, or other related, topics is required for each participant.
