future work

sunday 5:30-7:30 p.m.
convention centre, rooms 8 & 15

Attention students in search of a research topic! OOPSLA`98 presents a new activity just for you. On Sunday evening join other students plus a panel of world-class researchers for an idea sharing session. You will hear researchers discuss their ideas for "future work" based on their current activities. Bring your own ideas to contribute. Where is research in object-oriented languages and software development techniques going? What role can you play?

This event is open to all student registrants of OOPSLA`98.

doctoral symposium

monday 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
waterfront centre hotel, nootka room

OOPSLA'98 will provide a selected group of Ph.D. students with a forum in which to present their work and to obtain guidance from a faculty of university and industry researchers as well as the other symposium participants.   Doctoral students who are within one year of thesis completion are invited to apply to present their research to the Doctoral Symposium faculty in a closed session in which a group of 8 to 10 students present their research in a workshop format to each other and a group of 4 to 5 mentors. Due to the mentoring nature of the event, it is only open to those selected for participation. However, many of the symposium participants will have poster sessions and, in the past, some even have papers accepted for presentation. For 1998, an additional session, Future Work, will be added to the symposium that is open to all graduate students. Industry and academic researchers will provide capsule descriptions of the state of research and their ideas for future work in a selected number of areas. The format will be intended to provide those students searching for a specific topic with an opportunity to survey a set of topics viewed as significant by the research community. The session will be scheduled to facilitate the participation of all student volunteers. The one-day symposium aims to broaden the perspectives of new entrants to the object-technology research community.

Each applicant for presentation status should have an approved committee and topic. We are looking for students who are advanced enough to have a specific research proposal and some preliminary results, but with sufficient time remaining to thesis completion to benefit from the symposium experience. Application forms for describing the thesis topic and progress are available from the Symposium chair. A brief letter of recommendation from the student's thesis advisor is also required. Students selected as participants will receive partial reimbursement for conference-related expenses.

Students may request application forms by electronic mail beginning January 1998. Applications are due by 1 May 1998; notification of acceptance will be by 21 July 1998. Email requests for application forms to :
