Conference Chair: Brent Hailpern IBM TJ Watson Research Center
OOPSLA is well-known as the premier conference for object technology. The technical program has much to offer you, whether you're an object technology expert, a novice, or somewhere in between. There's a large variety of sessions to choose from: highly interactive workshops, an outstanding offering of tutorials and invited speakers on a broad range of thought-provoking topics, panels intended to stir up controversy, technical papers capturing the latest in research advances and experiences, a first-rate product and publisher exhibition, demonstrations of new technologies, practitioners' reports of real-life experiences and lessons learned, posters displaying brand new ideas and summarizing workshop results, special programs for Ph.D. students (the Doctoral Symposium) and for academic and industrial educators (the Educators' Symposium), and our ever-popular DesignFest and CodeFest. This year we are hosting a new Symposium on Enterprise Applications and Object Technology - examining the issues of applying real-world object technology in the context of large system design. This one-day symposium will consist of invited talks and panels from industry experts. We hope you will find it an exciting addition to the OOPSLA experience. And of course, we have a full plate of social events for you. The networking opportunities are unparalleled! Read through this Advance Program and begin to construct your own path through the conference week - or use our new tracks that can lead you through the important topics that pervade the OOPSLA venues. There's something special for nearly everyone. If this will be your first time at OOPSLA, there will be a special session on Wednesday, right after the keynote address, to help you find your way through the conference and to answer your questions. Please note that the conference is Monday to Friday this year, instead of the usual Sunday to Thursday. We look forward to seeing you in Denver!

There are five invited talks, some focussed specifically on object technology and others on connected technical ideas and philosophies. There are nine panels at which you can hear experts in various aspects of object technology debate some controversial issues facing practitioners and researchers. There are three sessions devoted to "Practitioner Reports," which provide first-hand accounts of experiences using object technology. And there are ten sessions devoted to the presentation of the technical papers selected by the program committee for publication in the OOPSLA proceedings. There were 30 papers selected from 152 submissions. Each submission was reviewed by at least three program committee members and/or outside reviewers. Papers submitted by members of the program committee were subjected to more rigorous review criteria. The program committee met in mid-May for two days to discuss the papers and to make the final selections. The result is a very solid and thought-provoking technical program that continues to push of the frontier of object technology. We've added a new session, "OOPSLA Orientation for Newcomers," for first time OOPSLA attendees. We want to meet all of you who are new to OOPSLA and short circuit your learning curve in order to maximize your OOPSLA experience. As in previous years, there's a DesignFest, an Educators' Symposium, and a Doctoral Symposium. A high quality program is only possible with a lot of high quality help. Let me express my sincere thanks to the members of the program committee for their conscientious volunteer effort in evaluating the technical paper submissions and for participating in the committee meeting. Their investment of time and talent is significant. I also thank the many outside reviewers for their assistance. And finally, my deep appreciation goes to the authors of the submitted papers for their hard work and great ideas. I sincerely hope that you find the OOPSLA '99 technical program as exciting to attend as it has been for us to prepare! Linda M. Northrop |
